TOPICS OF DISCUSSION

Because the experience of relational trauma causes far-reaching consequences that manifest across all areas of human functioning and become reinforced throughout subsequent stages of development, a therapist working with someone carrying such a burden needs a broad perspective. This includes the ability to understand the dynamics and connections between the biological, psychological, relational, and behavioral domains, along with the competencies to intervene within each of them. In other words, just as complex trauma leaves a multifaceted imprint on a person, the therapist supporting their healing process must work in a comprehensive way.

With this in mind, during the conference entitled “Contemporary Approaches in the Psychotherapy of Relational and Complex Trauma,” we aim to engage in a discussion on current perspectives regarding the understanding and treatment of trauma across various therapeutic modalities and target groups.
Our goal will also be to foster integration among professionals in the field around this important topic.

We warmly invite you to a lecture by Dr. med. Beate Leisse on:

“How to work with C-PTSD – the difference between shock and developmental trauma – an introduction”, which will be delivered online on May 24, 2025, at 9:45 AM CEST. The lecture will be conducted in English with consecutive interpretation into Polish.

During the lecture, the differences between shock trauma and developmental trauma, as well as their significance in the therapeutic process of Complex PTSD (C-PTSD), will be discussed. Shock trauma refers to a single, intense event that overwhelms an individual’s adaptive capacity, whereas developmental trauma stems from chronic, repetitive experiences, such as neglect or childhood abuse. Therapeutic work with C-PTSD requires recognizing the multidimensional effects of these experiences, including emotional regulation difficulties, interpersonal challenges, and issues with self-esteem. This lecture introduces the process of treating individuals struggling with the consequences of developmental and relational trauma, emphasizing the neurobiology of trauma and the importance of supporting identity integration and restoring psychological well-being.
